When do babies usually start teething?

My son is 3 1/2 months old and the past week he hasn't been himself. He seems to want to gum on things but he doesn't have the hand-eye coordination yet. I know from my friends that they thought their kids were teething about this time but the teeth didn't come in until almost a year old
